We are grieving in my house. Snickers, our beloved cocker spaniel mix has passed away. She was just shy of 13 years old. Even though she was full of years, when your pet dies letting go is not easy.
You won't find her name in any record books. To us, she was one of the greatest dogs who ever lived. She and her sibling, Twix, appeared on her doorstep as throwaways a few days after we buried my mother-in-law.
When the puppies appeared, it was my plan to find another home for them very quickly. When the kids came home from school that plan changed. They were the happiest they'd just about ever been. This goes for my daughter, the dogs and my husband.
A few days ago, Snickers passed away peacefully. Now, we are in the process of picking up the pieces and grieving. Even though we have two other dogs, Twix and my daughter's service animal Tomlin, we still miss Snickers.
Pets are members of your family. They accept you as you are. They don't talk back, tell you all the things you did wrong for the day or do anything except love you.
When your pet dies letting go is a process that is different for each of us.
I've found some websites that have been helpful. Maybe they will be helpful for you too?

Why take a missions trip to Alaska?
Why take a missions trip to Alaska?
I've been asked that a lot lately.
The missions team from LaFollette United Methodist Church, combined with members from Jacksboro and also Caryville United Methodist Churches are going to Willow, Alaska in June.
I'm on the team and I can't wait to go! For me, it is the trip of a lifetime. My daughter and I are driving up and meeting my husband who's flying into the Anchorage Airport. He'll be working on the trip too. Then, the 3 of us will head back to Tennessee.
What will the impact be?
The people of Willow are too poor to provide a home for their pastor without help. Our team is that help. Under the oversight of a licensed contractor we are going to get to install insulation and windows into the new home. I've never done that before (which is precisely what drew me to the trip).
When I was growing up, any power tool was hands-off for girls. I did get to have my own hammer, a few nails and a manual saw. Anything other than that was forbidden. The thought was that I, by virtue of my gender, would surely hurt myself instead of completing a project.
That idea has persisted for 40 years. It is now time to lay that notion to rest.
Mission trips provide an opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people and stretch your wings. The trips pull you out of your comfort zone and force you to look at life from a different perspective.
For the people of the United Methodist Church, a mission trip away also serves as a powerful reminder. The UMC is a connectional ministry. Being connectional is kind of like being a part of a big family. You have aunts, uncles and cousins that you've never met because they live all across the globe. On a missions trip, you get to meet the family that you didn't know you had and get to know them.
Along the way, you also get to know yourself and God, in a deeper and richer way.
On top of that, this time, on this missions trip to Willow, Alaska we get to learn how to install windows.
How's that for cool? Why take a missions trip to Alaska? Why wouldn't you?

Honest Internet Work Paid Off a Credit Card Bill Loan Debt
Many people know that I do freelance internet writing to supplement my income. This has been a help to me. In the past, I've done things like wait tables, deliver pizza and hold yard sales. Those are great ways to earn money. But, I also have health issues which makes it hard to keep a full time job and I like to volunteer.
After much searching, I found some places online that offer legitimate ways to make money. One is via eBay. The other ways are all freelance writing opportunities.
Granted, these jobs are not high-paying. But it all adds up. For the past few months I have been able to average about $200-$300 per month by writing online. There are no extra expenses for gasoline or meals out. I just use the internet connection that my family already has.
Check out my Associated Content article to learn more about how to make money on the internet. It lists the companies used and tells about each one.

Bad PIzza Delivery in Knoxville? Try Tipping the Driver.
To pay off some medical bills last year I took a temporary job as a pizza delivery driver. Sounds crazy right? Not really.
Because of tips, it paid decently despite headaches and extra expenses. Plus, the boss was beyond super. She gave me absolutely no problems when I was late because of my primary job. Compared to my day job, pizza delivery was low stress (after I started getting the hang of things!)
It also gave me a glimpse into a world that I hadn't discovered. Make no mistake, pizza delivery is another realm. The drivers may fuss about each other but are pretty well bonded. They pick and jab but they have each other's backs.
The glimpse was fascinating but it had a shadowy side.
Homes that ordered pizza regularly were known among drivers. The homes that tipped the most got the best service. Pizza drivers have even been known to take pizza to places out of the delivery route because the tip was good. (The delivery still had to be close to the boundary.)
If your home didn't tip you might not get good service. Maybe those napkins routinely got forgotten or the driver grabbed the wrong drink. It's not that the drivers that I worked with set out to give bad service. It's just that they would take care to double and triple check everything before leaving if they thought they were getting a $5 tip.
Most drivers rely on the tips as their main form of income. The following is an article that I wrote for Associated Content. It's called "Confessions of a Pizza Delivery Driver".
Next time you want good pizza delivery service be sure to tip the driver well. When you place your order, it doesn't hurt to mention that the driver may get a tip of a certain amount. To learn how much is considered good or mediocre read the above article.

Book Review I WIll Not be Broken
I Will Not be Broken by Jerry White is one of the best books that I have ever read. It is inspirational and helpful. The stories of the people highlighted here give us a road map for how to overcome trauma. Jerry White is himself a trauma survivor.
As a college student he stepped on a landmine. The explosive force blew away his leg from just below the knee. Doctors raced to not just save the rest of his leg but Jerry's life. By his side were friends who carried him from the minefield and into healing.
The resulting book is not just simply "Jerry's Story". Indeed, Jerry White has taken pains to interview others who have overcome a variety of traumas. From facing cancer, to losing limbs in landmine accidents to rape victims, anyone who has a trauma to overcome can find solace and direction within the pages of I Will Not Be Broken.

Alaska Backpackers Inn Mission Trip
Our Alaska mission trip is getting closer by the day. Today, I made reservations for my daughter and myself to stay at the Alaska Backpackers Inn.
The photos that are online look great. Plus, they have internet access, a kitchen and more.
We are viewing this as the "Mother-Daughter Trip of a Lifetime". I certainly can't wait. It will be good to drive to Alaksa and see that area of the country. I am looking forward to the time we'll spend together and in learning new skills.
When we arrive at our destination we are going to be doing something new. My daughter and I are going to be part of a team that will install insulation and windows in a parsonage. This is all new to me and I'm excited.
Don't worry though. We have a contractor that's going along on the trip. He'll make sure that we do everything right. We'll have to. All of our work is going to be inspected and must be up to codes.

How to FInd Service Dog and Pet Friendly Motels
My daughter has a service dog. His name is Tomlin. Traveling with him is a treat. But we have run across times when we've had problems finding a motel. Desk clerks (and some franchise owners) see a dog and automatically think "pet". No amount of convincing will work.
Once, we were in a motel in Morristown, TN. The owner there said our dog could stay with us if we provided a prescription from our doctor stating the need for the service dog. He also asked that we provide papers stating that the dog is a service animal and had been duly trained. It's too bad that he did that. We needed a 3 night stay and took our business elsewhere. Not only that, but they lost business from friends and relatives who wanted to visit the area.
Thankfully, the tide is turning and dogs are being welcomed more often. Some places do ask for a fee. Often, we're finding that the fee is waived once they see that our dog is a service animal. Usually, once glance at the harness is all it takes.
To help others find pet friendly hotels for their service dog or pet I've written the following article. It's on Associated Content. Besides traveling with our service dog we've got two other dogs that are pets. When they were younger, they got to vacation with us occasionally too.
Sam & her pet Twix at the Grand Canyon.
I hope you enjoy the article on how to find service dog and pet friendly motels. If you have another suggestions please do post them in the comments.

Cheap Fun Things to do in Knoxville
There are plenty of cheap, fun things to do in Knoxville. If you want something different to do with the kids this summer try this great list.
Market Square Mall is filled with fun activities. There always seems to be something going on there on Friday nights and Saturdays. It's free to walk around the mall.
East Tennessee Regional History Museum does charge a small fee. This goes to support the museum. Learn about our region's history by exploring this museum.
Mast General Store is also in downtown. Walk there from Market Square Mall. Kids will enjoy the old-fashioned layout of the building. Candy is for sale in barrels. Everything else that is for sale has a modern twist.
The Knoxville Museum of Art has no fee! They do accept donations. You decide what you can afford. There's never been a better time to take the kids to a museum.
Knoxville has many parks that you can enjoy. These are great places for a summertime picnic.

Restaurant Health Scores
Restaurant health scores are something I try to post in each restaurant review. I think that it is an important aspect of the review. A high score generally indicates that the crew can work together on an ongoing basis to get things done. A low score can be a sign that there are problems within the restaurant. The health department considers anything below a 70 to be unsanitary.
Lately, there seems to be an abundance of restaurants with low scores. You can check these out for yourself on the state of Tennessee website. The url is http://tn.state.gegov.com/tennessee/
All you do is input the city, state and restaurant name. The information on the how the restaurants are scored is online. When the report comes up the full inspection form is available with indicators on how many points were taken off for which infraction.
This gives you the information you need to decide where, and if, you would like to eat out. When considering where to go sometimes it's nice to look at the restaurant health scores.
Happy dining!

Save Money by Camping?
We've heard that you can save money by camping instead of staying in a motel. While researching options for the Alaska trip we've also found out another thing. You can go places with if you have an RV or tent that you can't go with just a car. In some areas, there may be no place to spend the night.
Today, Hubby and I went to Tennessee RV. The sales rep we talked with was very nice. He answered our questions about pop-up campers but didn't share a lot of extra knowledge. Still, it helped us to make a more informed decision.
We decided not to purchase a camper right now. Our little car won't pull anything but the tiniest model. For that, I think I'd just as soon have a tent. We'll see if driving to Alaska changes my mind.
jAs for costs, it does seem that we can save money by camping. But only if we don't have to replace a transmission that's damaged by pulling more than the car was designed to pull.

Be frugal. Use Skype. Save money.
Skype looks like it saves you money. As you know, I'm getting ready to take a trip to Alaska in June. Hubby and I are looking for a way to make calls from the US and Canada inexpensively. It looks like we may have found our answer with Skype.
With Skype, you can make calls from PC to PC for free. If your computer has a microphone you don't have to buy any other equipment. All you do is download the software, pick out a user name and start calling.
You can call to landlines and cell phones too. They are .021 per minute. These calls are pretty cheap when compared to traditional phone company charges. Options are to pay as you go or to pay monthly. The credit is good for 180 days. Voice mail services are extra.
It looks like Skype may be what I need to communicate from Canada to the US inexpensively. Look at it at www.skype.com to see if it's right for you.

Where to Find Dining Out Coupons to Save Money
Where to get dining out coupons to save money? This is a question that people have been asking me. The answer is that they are almost everywhere - if you know where to look.
School Coupon Books - Many restaurants offer good values for dining out. Using these coupons will save you money and help the schools. If you didn't purchase one this year plan now to pick one up next year. These are available from Knox County schools in October.
Restaurant websites - Before dining out check out the website of the restaurant you are going to try. Some have coupons online or post special offers.
Newspaper - Sometimes restaurants will run coupons in the newspaper. There is no set day. You will have to keep watch. If you don't take the newspaper a friend or relative might. Ask around.
Restaurant.Com - Buy a coupon here for a fraction of the face value.
Where are other places to find coupons? Leave a comment and tell others.

Following Gayle Crabtree on Twitter
Do you Twitter? If so, you can follow me. By choosing to follow me on Twitter you'll get all the latest updates. These are short messages that can go directly to your mobile phone. If you don't want the messages coming in it's ok. Disable following by phone and you'll still be able to follow me on the web. It's a great way to keep in touch.
We're going to be using Twitter a lot in June. I plan to post frequent updates on the Alaska trip. I'm researching cell phone providers now to determine which one I'll be able to use. As soon as we get the kinks worked out you can bet I'll post an update.

ALDI Grocery Store Opens in Knoxville
What an unusual shopping experience that was! Hubby and I went to ALDI to try it out. Another Associated Content writer put me onto it and boy am I glad!
There is one thing though. ALDI is only open until 8:00 pm! We sneaked in about 30 minutes before closing. The place was packed! It's a good thing that the parking lot is large and easy to navigate. We managed to catch a car as it was leaving. Lucky us! We got to park close to the door!
We noticed that ALDI was unusual right off the bat. The experience starts at the shopping carts. These are right outside the door. Put your quarter into the slot and remove the chain. Then, you are ready to shop. Don't worry. When you bring the cart back you get your quarter back. It's their way of making sure the carts aren't scattered across the parking lot.
Once you go in it's like shopping in a warehouse. The boxes are stacked neatly on the shelves. For cans and jars the boxes are cut down so you can get to the contents. Neat!
This has to be the cleanest store that I have ever been in. Everything was tidy despite being slammed.
Yet, even though the lines were long checkout was a breeze. This is different too. You either bring your own bags or you buy them. Go environment!
Speaking of bags, bagging your groceries is a do-it-yourself kind of job.
All this cuts costs. Speaking of which, ALDI did seem to be lower priced that most other grocery stores. For the most part, the brands are different that I'm used to buying. It will be interesting to try them out.
I can't say that I'd make a special trip to go to ALDI. If I am in the neighborhood I will definitely stop in.
Neat!

Being Frugal Means Never Pay Retail Again and...
Being frugal means never pay retail again and so much more. We've been putting frugality into practice these past few weeks. Not only is this helping to stretch our budget but we're having fun in the process.
Last night, we visited Wal-Mart. Instead of piling our buggy high with things we didn't need we earnestly compared prices. A few nights ago we went to the new ALDI in Knoxville. At that moment, the prices didn't seem to be as good as they do now.
But being frugal does not mean being cheap. There is a difference. I like to have a night out at a movie once-in-awhile. There are ways to do this frugally too. Instead of going when the movie first comes out I can wait longer to go to a $1 theater.
A local church is offering a free movie night. Yes, the movie is older but I get to be out and I get to enjoy seeing friends. Not only is it frugal but it's a lot of fun!
If we have to eat out I post a review of the restaurant on Associated Content. This helps pay for the meal and I'm gaining a following. This isn't just being frugal it's also helping me make a few dollars.
In 3 months I'll be off to Alaska with my daughter in tow. Instead of having to pay retail I am looking on eBay for the items we will need. Do this saved me over $150 on the tent we are going to buy. Sleeping in the tent is much more frugal than staying in a motel. The tent will pay for itself by saving us several hundred dollars.
Being frugal is also helping me pay off debt. In a couple of more weeks we'll say goodbye to our last credit card.
Being frugal can be fun. It's nice to hear the change piling up in the piggy bank. It's also nice to never pay retail again.

United Methodist Volunteers in Mission
Today was the leader training for the United Methodist Volunteers in Mission. This was a treat. The speaker did a fine job. I learned so much! Plus, it was great to see the others that were there.
The trip to Alaska seems so far off but so close at the same time. I've been looking at the calendar, the budget and trying to formulate a workable itinery. Wow. This is tough. The way AAA routed us back from Alaska is a scenic route through much of the northwestern US. I'm sure it's beautiful but it is so expensive.
When the Econo Lodge hits $161 a night you know you're standing in high cotton! We'll keep plugging away and see what we come up with. Right now, we'll probably come home the way we went out. That's ok too.

Driving to Alaska for the Missions Trip
Ok. John (aka Hubby) is convinced that I have lost it - again. I'm researching the drive to Alaska. We'll be going through Minnesota, to Winnipeg and across to Edmonton and then finally to Willow, Alaska. It's just Allie and myself on the way up.
We discussed taking Tomlin but nixed the idea. He likes traveling but there's something about sharing a PT Cruiser with an 80 pound dog for a few thousand miles through uncertain terrain. So, he'll be at home being spoiled silly by Sam and John.
Get this? Part of the road to Alaska is apparently unpaved. How's that for different?
One wonders if it will be like living in North Carolina all over again? I have memories of my daughter's high school band doing an entire parade route on an unpaved road. Come to think of it, this is the same daughter that is going to Alaska with me. Hmmmm. Is there a connection here?
Keep checking out the blog for updates. June can't come too soon. See you in Alaska!

Make Greeting Cards Rubber Stamp the Budget Blues Away!
To help save money, we've found to helps to make your own greeting cards. There are many ways to do this. Envelopes can be purchased at Staples for about $15 for 100. A pack of 500 sheets of card stock in white from Wal-Mart runs about $4.00.
Cards can be printed from your ink jet printer, decorated with magic markers and magazine cut-outs. Rubber stamping is a popular craft. Fancy scissors can be purchased from the Dollar Tree for $1.00 each. Once you have gathered supplies you can make cards for pennies on the dollar. Some rubber stamps can also be purchased there for $1.00 each.
Another potential source of rubber stamps is Freecycle. Visit Freecycle.Org to find a group near you. People will post to this list when they have something they no longer use and want to keep from a landfill. It's ok to post if you are looking for something. Someone on the list might have it and respond.
Make your own greeting cards. It's a great way to save money. Plus, the recipient is happier knowing the card was made with love. That's an unbeatable combination.

AAA Membership. What a Value. Stretch your budget here!
Part of our preparation plans for the Alaska trip included renewing our AAA membership. What a value! Not only do you get the great roadside assistance that they are famous for but there's a lot of value added options these days.
The agents were super. We left loaded down with information about driving to Alaska. But, they also gave us Food City coupons and a brochure that lists several places where we can get a AAA discount.
Hubby loves Rockport Shoes. With a 40% coupon from AAA you can bet we'll be going there this month. You can also get 20% off at Pay Less shoes. Movie tickets and theme park entrances are also less expensive at AAA.
How's that for frugal living?
Besides peace of mind the AAA membership is a great value. You can definitely stretch your budget here!

Frugal Living Tip Tire Pressure Makes a Difference
In this day and age everyone is cutting back where we can. Common sense tells us to buy items on sale, conserve trips and generally reduce, reuse and recycle.
Recently, I read where tire pressure could affect gas mileage. If the tires are underinflated it can cost you more in gas mileage. Not being a car expert I did some checking. Then, I inflated my tires. Guess what? The experts are right. It did help my gas mileage.
Since air is free (sometimes) and gas isn't this can really add up. According to Edumunds.Com keeping your tires inflated to the proper pressure can help you save up to $800 a year on fuel. For a frugal living tip, tire pressure can really make a difference.
What will I do with an $800 a year savings? I'm sure my college age daughters will help me think of something. In the meantime, check out these articles for more information.

LaFollette Missions Team Fundraisers Alaska or Bust
Can you believe the missions trip to Alaska is only 3 months away in 2009? That sounds like a lot of time but it's not. For some of us, it's only 3 paydays. We're going to be doing a lot of fundraising to get to Alaska. The proceeds from these fundraisers will go toward building supplies.
As you can imagine, the cost of supplies are much higher in Alaska than they are here. This is partially because of transportation challenges and also because of the type of construction. Walls have to be thicker, this means windows have to be thicker etc.
Can you help us help the people of Willow, Alaska?

Rafferty's Restaurant Review
Rafferty's Restaurant. Every since the first restaurant opened in Bowling Green, Ky, Rafferty's has been a name that conjures up images of good food, excellent service and a good dinner out.
Hubby and I dined there on Friday. It was an experience that will hopefully never be repeated. The restaurant should come with a warning sign reading "People With Allergies Beware". Basically, everything was great. Except that I am allergic to onions and after telling the server, he recommend a dish that had onions in it.
Smart? NOT!

Movie Review on Madea Goes to Jail
Hubby and I went to see the movie "Medea Goes to Jail". If you like Tyler Perry this is a must-see. It's not quite as well done as "Diary of a Mad Black Woman" but it's still a good movie. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.
There are some minor inconsistencies in the film. This detracted somewhat from our enjoyment. But if you are a die-hard Madea fan you'll love the movie. Tyler Perry did a good job putting this one together.
