Newfound Gap open from Gatlinburg to North Carolina

Late yesterday evening the National Park Service announced that Newfound Gap is open from Gatlinburg to the state line. The mud and debris from the landslide a few days ago no longer effects the Tennessee side.

However, the North Carolina side of Newfound Gap was the hardest hit. No one knows when that portion of the road will be open. The landslide that closed Newfound Gap there is one of many that the state of North Carolina suffered. Weird weather patterns that have been occurring lately is making it difficult to do an assessment or to predict what will happen on the effected portion of the roadway.

In a separate incident, another slide closed the popular Cherohala Skyway on the North Carolina side. The popular scenic by-way is open from Tellico Plains to Tennessee. Drivers who are going through any mountainous road during the winter months should always watch for possible ice and snow.

The National Parks Service for the Great Smoky Mountains National Park has a Twitter feed. This is the quickest way to get updates on road conditions in Newfound Gap and elsewhere.
