Product Review: Air Fryer

I have severe stomach issues and cannot eat a variety of food items.  I certainly cannot eat fried foods.  The last time I had a burger and fries at a fast food restaurant was in the mid-80’s.  I do like crisp potatoes and to satisfy that craving I cut potatoes thin, use a little olive oil and roast them in the oven at a high temperature.  Unfortunately, the crispy part usually sticks to the pan while the remainder of is mushy.  This always winds up causing me to work extremely hard to get the burned pieces out of the pan and my craving for crisp potatoes falls by the wayside.

A few months ago, my husband saw an air fryer on an infomercial and was all hyped up so I had to watch it also.  When they showed potatoes, they used frozen fries – which you may not realize are coated with oil and who knows what else.  That turned me off.  If I could eat those frozen potatoes then I could cook them in the regular oven and save the cost of an air fryer.

Fast forward to a few weeks ago.  I am a QVC addict, I admit it, I’m hooked.  I was watching a presentation for a ‘Cooks Essential’ air fryer.  I believe Cooks Essential is only sold on QVC and they make all kinds of cooking items.  I do own a set of their pots and pans.  I watched the presentation many times that day.  I wanted to make sure I could take a fresh potato, wash, peel, cut and air fry and make it come out like a ‘real French fry”.  I debated, I ordered, I cancelled the order, I ordered again and that last time let it ride.

I even ordered the air fryer cookbook which arrived before the air fryer.  I studied the book, found several recipes for fries and was prepared for making them as soon as the machine arrived.  The day finally arrived and my husband and I headed to the kitchen, prepared the potatoes, followed the recipe in the book to the ‘T’ and waited and waited and waited for the potatoes to cook.

Loved the color but it didn't work!

After 45 minutes, we gave up, they should have been done in about 20 minutes.  They were a little hot, not cooked and certainly not crisp.  We re-read the recipe.  OK, the recipe called for russet potatoes and I used a different type – that must have been it.  The next day we bought the right kind of potato and tried again.  The same thing.  We did notice that the plastic piece at the top of the machine had sunk in and changed shape.  We decided it was time to send the machine back.  My husband figured out that the fan had not been working which is why the food didn’t cook.

I received a notice from QVC that they received the unit but they were out of stock.  They credited me for the money I had paid and I moved on….I like Amazon so I checked their site.  Sine the Cooks Essential air fryer had a large basket I wanted to make sure to get one that was about the same size.  I came across the Go Wise USA unit.  The basket size was a tad larger and the price was about the same.  I decided to order it.

This brand works like a champ!

We went through the same process.  We soaked the russet potatoes, dried them, used ½ teaspoon of olive oil and a little sea salt and put them in the basket….all systems go and when the unit started we heard the fan running – something we hadn’t heard with the previous unit.  The potatoes were cooking!  We were so excited we kept checking them to make sure they were doing their thing, and they were!

Air fried French fries - worth the price of the unit!

Approximately 15 minutes later we were eating fresh air fired French fries and they were crispy and delicious.  I felt like a kid having her first French fry LOL!  The unit did all it was supposed to do.  The Go Wise USA unit is easy to use, it comes with a recipe book with a couple of recipes to get your started.  I would recommend this air fryer (or any brand you like) but be sure to buy a cookbook specific to air frying.

Air fried Apple Puff Pastry  - delish!!!

You can literally cook ‘almost’ anything:  appetizers, desserts, veggies, entrees and on and on.  If you have been on the fence about an air fryer you might want to go for it.  If you don’t like it you can return it, but give it a shot.  Take my word for it, the air fried potatoes alone are worth the price of the unit!

Just google GoWise USA air fryers and you will find them.
