Take a Day Trip to Dayton, Tennessee
Dayton, Tennessee is in Rhea (pronounced Ray) Country Tennessee. It is on the other side of the Tennessee River from where I live, only a 45 minute ride. We have gone to Dayton a few times for dinner at Jacob Myer's. There are several options for dining and shopping and the lake for relaxing, fishing and boating. There are strawberry fields that will soon be ripe with berries. There is history in Dayton, the Scopes Monkey Trial certainly made the news in its day.
Scopes Monkey Trial
While many of you have not heard of Dayton, Tennessee you probably have heard of the Scopes Money Trial. Well, that was held in Dayton. If you would like more information I will provide a link at the end of this article.
Dayton is also famous for fishing, yes, it’s the home of a professional fishing tournament called Bassmaster. This year it will be held April 20-22 at Lake Chickamauga in Dayton. I am providing a link at the end of this article that has the full schedule of tournaments in Tennessee and across the US. While my husband and I enjoy fishing in our little pond, we aren’t into the type of fishing these pros take on. We have been at the lake a day before a tournament and the water was full of fancy and expensive fishing boat. They fish rain or shine!
Now I am going to get the ‘meat’ of this article – or should I say the ‘fruits’ of my labor – the beautiful strawberry. Dayton is home to huge strawberry farms. It is also home to the upcoming Strawberry Festival which will be held May 13, 2017. This is the 70th annual Tennessee Strawberry Festival and should be a fun day that includes a parade, food competitions and of course the mighty strawberry. For more information there is a link at the end of this article.
I don’t know about you, but to me the announcement ‘strawberries are in’ makes me happy. Nothing better than that first bite of that first ripe strawberry fresh from the local farm. You cannot compare a fresh berry to what they sell in the grocery store.
